Kilimanjaro can be attempted at any time of the year, though some months more ideal than others. Due to the mountain’s proximity to the equator, the region experiences fewer seasonal changes than some travelers might expect.

Instead, as in other equatorial locations, Tanzania experiences “rainy” and “dry” seasons instead of the four seasons found north and south. As such, certain times of the year are more conducive to mountain hiking than are others.

The best times to climb Kilimanjaro are from January to early March and again from June through October. These two times of the year are considered the drier seasons, which yield an easier and more enjoyable access to the summit.

While the earlier annual climbing window (January to March) is typically slightly colder than the later one, there are usually fewer climbers on the trails. For this reason, it could be a more preferable time to climb for some travelers. The earlier climbing window is sometimes snowier than the second as well.

The later annual climbing window (June through October) is warmer and more popular. There are usually far more climbers on the trails at this time of year because of the more favorable conditions.

Decide which time of year is best for you and if you’re willing to trade warmer temperatures for a more secluded climbing experience!
